I’m a private music teacher, and one thing I heard constanlty from parents, is that their child would play a song through once, and thought they were finished practicing. And so I begin teaching my students how to practice, which they finally begin to understand was different from what they were doing. What you are through outlawing the “I’m done”, is basically teaching your students how to study.

Thanks for the tips! I actually teach 5-8 and I love that most of these strategies still apply and can be implemented with ease. Especially the blurt box concept! My combined 7th/8th grade class will be two very chatty classes and I feel a bit more prepared to start the year with them.

I am a retired teacher and have taught from 6th grade all the way down to kindergarten. I would like to recommend 2 books. Transformational Parenting by Jennifer Johnston- Jones and Positive Discipline by Jane Nelson. Both are available at Amazon. They both changed my life. Especially with raising my granddaughter.

Thanks for your articles. Very i informative. I taught music for many years, then two years ago we moved to another state. Last week, I was finally hired as a music teacher! Yay! Discipline is a problem in music classes, and all the situations you brought up were also part of my discipline experience. Wondering how you would suggest tweaking your suggestions for music. I use Unfinished Folders in my class and they’re great. I will make a diagram and model with my own desk so that students know what to do. Great ideas. Thank you!

Hi Alieke!

I would do exactly what you said! Just explain that this is a time when everyone is welcome to speak without raising their hand. You might discuss basic manners such as making space for others’ voices (not monopolizing the conversation) and waiting until someone finishes speaking before adding in. I find most groups of students handle this no problem!

What do you do when you have the kind of classroom discussion/conversation where really all you want is for kids to give their responses, respond to each other etc. Do they still raise their hand or do you have them speak out/blurt? Would you specifically say… This is the time to speak without having to raise your hand? Thanks!
